Investigators in this study assessed consumer knowledge and perceptions of formularies (the list of drugs covered by an insurance company or health plan).
The team surveyed 714 consumers who were waiting to receive prescription medications at their community pharmacies in Houston, Texas.
They found that these consumers were satisfied with their prescription insurance plans.

However, they determined that their attitude toward formularies were negative. The consumers' negative perceptions were significantly correlated with their satisfaction scores.
The team found that only 25% of the surveyed population had a copy of the formulary. Many consumers had no knowledge of their formulary or of the drugs it covered.
Dr Sujit Sansgiry's team concluded, "Efforts to educate patients may reduce the difficulty faced by pharmacists in explaining formulary issues to consumers".
