In the early nineties, it was questioned whether cholangiopathies occurring in AIDS patients infected with Cryptosporidia Microsporidia, or cytomegalovirus were related to an infectious cholangitis or to an immunological disease of the biliary tract just associated with an intestinal infection.
This slide clearly demonstrates that Microsporidia infection of bile duct cells is possible (Ann Intern Med 1992; 117: 401-2), and plays probably an important role in the pathogenesis of "Microsporidia-associated" cholangiopathies.
Medical truth still often lies in the tissues. We only have first to reach the right place in the tissues, and second to use the right tool!
