My time spent here is what gave rise to my interest in duodenal ulcers. Pyloric stenosis was the most frequent complication observed. These cases came from the rice eating areas, and very few were from the dry areas, where the staple diet was millet. This suggested a dietary factor in the etiology, and led to research on the geographical distribution of duodenal ulcer in relation to staple diets. It was found that the prevalence of duodenal ulceration, in several countries, was high in areas where rice, yam, sweet potato, cassava and white flour were eaten. Prevalence was low where the staple diet was unrefined wheat, certain millets or pulses, or where it contained soya.
