Dr. Tadataka (Tachi) Yamada is president of the Bill and Melinda Gates Global Health Program, with the overall responsibility of leading the foundation’s efforts to help develop and deliver low-cost, life-saving health tools for the developing world.  He oversees the programs grantmaking, which focuses on four major activities: discovery, development, delivery, and advocacy.

Before joining the foundation, Dr Yamada served as chairman of research and development at GlaxoSmithKline and prior to that, chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School and physician-in-chief at the University of Michigan Medical Centre. He is a former past president of the American Gastroenterological Association and the Association of American Physicians.

Dr Yamada is editor-in-Chief of the Textbook of Gastroenterology, a hugely respected reference work, both in the clinical area of gastroenterology which it dominates, but also in medical textbook publishing in general.  Its companion titles, the Atlas of Gastroenterology and Principles of Clinical Gastroenterology are also highly popular and well respected products.
