Dr Tony Speer is currently a gastroenterologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.
Dr Speer attended Melbourne University where he completed a Bachelor of Engineering in 1972 and then Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery in 1977.
He trained in gastroenterology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Prince Henry's Hospital in Melbourne, and later with Peter Cotton at the Middlesex Hospital in London between 1984 and 1986.
His research interests include the role of new technology in ERCP, cleaning and disinfection of endoscopes and equipment, and the role of bacterial biofilm in the bile duct and pancreas.
He has been a member and chairman of the Conjoint Committee for the Recognition of Training in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, council member and treasurer of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia and is a past president of the Australian Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Association. Dr Speer is an International Editor for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
