In 1995, he received the Gastroenterology Prize, which is awarded annually by the Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology to a single successful gastroenterologist.

Due to early research on gastritis, gastric cancer and H. pylori, he has been a member of many distinguished International Working Parties and committees producing the initial guidelines and consensus statements within the H. pylori field. For example, the Working Party on Sydney System in 1990, and IARC and NIH consensus conferences in 1994 on the relationship between H. pylori infection and peptic ulcer diseases or gastric cancer.

In addition to clinical work, Professor Sipponen has been active in research that is focused mainly on the pathology of gastritis, gastric cancer, and peptic ulcer disease. In recent years he has also conducted research on the pathology of the gastroesophageal-junction in reflux disease.

Both alone and with his co-workers, Professor Sipponen has published approximately 300 papers or reviews and several hundred abstracts or short papers. Many medical theses have been completed in Finland and elsewhere in which he has been the responsible tutor or pathologist.

Professor Sipponen is married to Kirsti, and they have two sons: Lauri (31 years), who is an economist, and Arno (28 years), who is a graduated medical doctor from Freiburg University, Germany.

What made you decide to become a GI pathologist?
As a young resident pathologist I was ordered to run joint meetings with the gastroenterologists, because the older colleagues believed that endoscopic biopsies were too tiny for proper diagnosis. Now all want to be involved
Who was the teacher you admired the most?
My friend Max Siurala, who is the 'Grand Old Man' of gastroenterology in Finland. He brought me into the world of gastritis
Which research paper influenced you the most?
Breslow and Day´s book "Statistical Methods in Cancer Research" (1980). I was surprised how much a proper epidemiological analysis of cross-sectional data can offer.
What is the most important fact that you have discovered?
I am still looking for this.
What is the biggest mistake that you have made?
I overlooked the bacteria in gastric biopsies in the past.
What is your unfulfilled ambition?
To be a good magician.
What is your greatest regret?
I do not have any - I am a happy man.
How do you relax?
Doing a crossword puzzle.
What is your favorite sport?
Tennis.
What is your best place in the world?
Home, my study.
What is your favorite film?
"The Supper" ("La cena") - a film that appears on Finnish TV every Christmas.
What car do you drive?
Peugeot - I like the comfort.
Who is your favorite musician?
My granddaughter - a 4-year-old violinist.
What book are you reading at the moment?
Memoirs of the former chancellor of the Helsinki University.
Why did you get in involved in GastroHep.com?
Because of Roy Pounder - his energy and his sympathy in getting me involved.
