Petr Dite was born in 1941, in Hradec Králové, Czechoslovakia. He attended the Medical Faculty of Charles University, between 1960 and 1966, where he obtained his medical degree. He then underwent a scientific fellowship in internal medicine and clinical biochemistry, from 1966 to 1969. After this, Professor Dite became an Assistant Professor in internal medicine (1969-1982), and then moved on to becoming an Associate Professor (1982-1992), and Professor (1992-present) in internal medicine. In 1978 he also became a Specialist in gastroenterology.

Professor Dite has completed a number of postgraduate studies abroad. He has worked in the Department of Gastroenterology, Rostock University, Germany (1978), and the Department of Digestive Endoscopy, Oslo University, Norway (1982), among others.

He is a member of numerous societies. These include the Czech Society of Gastroenterology, the Czech Society of Hepatology, and the International Gastro-Surgical Club. He is on the editorial board of Endoscopy and the Journal of Czech and Slovak Gastroenterology. He is also the Area Editor of Hepato-Gastroenterology.

Professor Dite is currently the Vice-President of the Czech Society of Gastroenterology, and is President of the Czech Section of Digestive Endoscopy.

Professor Dite's areas of interest are the clinical implications of Helicobacter pylori, pancreatology, digestive endoscopy, and peptic ulcer disease.

He has authored over 300 publications and has taken part in several international research studies.

What made you decide to become a gastroenterologist?
My father was radiologist and his interest was cardiology and invasive gastroentero-radiology.
Who was the teacher you admired the most?
My teacher in my medical faculty, Professor Bartos, who was an excellent pancreatologist.
Which research paper influenced you the most?
The publications of Professor Dreilin and Professor Di Magno.
What is the most important fact that you have discovered?
My clinical and experimental works in 'Uraemic pancreatitis' and ERCP procedures in pediatrics.
What is your greatest regret?
That I am so old in the new millennium.
How do you relax?
Sport and music.
What is your favorite sport?
I played volleyball professionally, but my favorite sport is ice hockey.
What is your best place in the world?
Our family house in Brno and I also like Sydney.
What is your favorite film?
"Amadeus".
What car do you drive?
I drive a Skoda-Octavia.
