Nobuhiro Sato is currently Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine, and Chief of Division of Gastroenterology, Juntendo University School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan.

Nobuhiro Sato was born in Osaka and educated mainly in the City of Osaka. He obtained his MD degree from Osaka University Medical School in 1965, and finished his internship at its attached hospital. This is where he began his career as a physician.

At the same time, Professor Sato studied the mechanism of electron transport in the mitochondrial respiratory chain, as a staff member in the Department of Biochemistry, Osaka University. He then went to the Johnson Research Foundation, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he clarified an important role of mitochondrial b-type cytochromes in oxidative phosphorylation, under Professor B. Chance. Returning to Osaka, he became involved in a research program on the abnormality of mitochondria in GI and liver diseases.

In 1990, Nobuhiro Sato was invited to Tokyo as Professor and Chief of the Department of Gastroenterology at Juntendo University School of Medicine. Juntendo Hospital has the longest history of Western-style hospitals in Japan.
