Dr Jacques Deviere is currently Chairman of the Department of Gastroenterology at the Erasme University Hospital, Brussels, Belgium.

He has worked in this institution since 1983, and completed his qualification as a gastroenterologist in 1988 at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. He was a resident in Gastroenterology from 1988 to 1992, and Associate Professor in Gastroenterology from 1992 to 1998. Since 1998, Dr Deviere has been Professor of Medicine, and Chairman of the Department, which includes gastroenterology, hepatology, GI oncology, endoscopy, and liver transplantation.

His particular research interests include therapeutic endoscopy, liver diseases, and pathophysiology of pancreatic diseases. In 1995, he created the laboratory of experimental gastroenterology at the Brussels Free University, of which he is still the director.

Dr Deviere has been general secretary of the Royal Belgian Society of Gastroenterology from 1996 to 2001. He is member of the Board and Treasurer of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

He is author or co-author of 200 PubMed referenced publications, and has written 15 books chapters.
