Developers PARE Surgical said it would be possible for the first time to suture the soft tissue of the stomach, esophagus, and colon with a single insertion of a flexible endoscope.
The device is being marketed for the treatment of gastro-esophageal reflux disease in particular .
|The endoscopic system can be used to suture the soft tissue of the stomach, esophagus, and colon.
According to PARE Surgical, it can be used to place two small stitches near the lower esophageal sphincter to tighten the valve.
The procedure could be performed on an outpatient basis.
The endoscopic system could also be used to ligate large bleeding vessels in the stomach and for suturing openings and vessels in the colon, the developers said.
"The system will allow the gastroenterological surgeon to suture soft tissue when doing gastroenterological procedures by passing the suturing device through the operating channel of a flexible endoscope," a company spokesman said.
