Of the 81 patients, 21% suffered complications from the pyogenic hepatic abscesses.
The researchers found that the complications included vascular, pleuropulmonary, and biliary complications, as well as rupture into the pericardial and peritoneal cavities, GI tract, and retroperitoneum.
Dr Dal Mo Yang and colleagues concluded, "A knowledge of these complications is important for an early diagnosis and appropriate management".
