Gastroenterology remains the journal with the greatest impact factor, followed by Hepatology, and Seminars in Liver Disease.

Gut and the Journal of Hepatology also stay in 4th and 5th place, respectively.

Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics is still maintaining its strong position at number 6.

All of the top 6 journals have improved upon their impact factor published last year.

Journals with greatest impact factors:
1 Gastroenterology
2 Hepatology
3 Semin Liver Dis
4 Gut
5 J Hepatol
6 Aliment Pharmacol Ther

The impact factors are published by ISI. Their definition of an impact factor is "a measure of the frequency with which the 'average article' in a journal has been cited in a particular year or period."

The annual journal citation report impact factor is a ratio between citations and recent citable items published. Thus, the impact factor of a journal is calculated by dividing the number of current year citations to the source items published in that journal during the previous two years.

ISI explain that, "The impact factor is useful in clarifying the significance of absolute (or total) citation frequencies. It eliminates some of the bias of such counts, which favor large journals over small ones, or frequently issued journals over less frequently issued ones, and of older journals over newer ones.

Particularly in the latter case such journals have a larger citable body of literature than smaller or younger journals.

"All things being equal, the larger the number of previously published articles, the more often a journal will be cited."

Here is the "Top Forty" of the impact factors for 2001 (2000):
