Dr Slonim-Nevo and colleagues published that threatening life experiences and adverse family relations impact Crohn’s disease (CD) adversely.

In this study, the team examine the influence of these stressors in ulcerative colitis (UC).

Patients completed demography, economic status, the Patient-Simple Clinical Colitis Activity Index, the Short Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire, the Short-Form Health Survey, the Brief Symptom Inventory, the Family Assessment Device, and the List of Threatening Life Experiences.

The team found significant positive associations for the List of Threatening Life Experiences and Simple Clinical Colitis Activity Index, Family Assessment Device and SF-36 Mental Health, Family Assessment Device and the List of Threatening Life Experiences with Brief Symptom Inventory-Global Severity Index, and economic status with Short-Form Health Survey, and Short Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire.

Economic status had a greater effect on Brief Symptom Inventory-Global Severity Index in UC than CD
European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology
The negative associations included the List of Threatening Life Experiences with Short-Form Health Survey Physical/Mental Health, Short Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire with Family Assessment Device and the List of Threatening Life Experiences, economic status with Brief Symptom Inventory-Global Severity Index, and Patient-Simple Clinical Colitis Activity Index.

In structural equation modeling analysis, the researchers observed that the List of Threatening Life Experiences impacted economic status negatively and economic status impacted Brief Symptom Inventory-Global Severity Index negatively; List of Threatening Life Experiences impacted Brief Symptom Inventory-Global Severity Index positively, and Brief Symptom Inventory-Global Severity Index impacted Patient-Simple Clinical Colitis Activity Index positively.

In a split model, economic status had a greater effect on Brief Symptom Inventory-Global Severity Index in UC than CD, whereas other path magnitudes were similar.

Dr Slonim-Nevo's team concludes, "Threatening life experiences, adverse family relations, and poor economic status make UC patients less healthy both physically and mentally."

"The impact of economic status is worse in UC than CD."
