Anemia is a common complication of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).
Dr Christoph Gasche and colleagues from Austria formed an international working party.
The research team developed guidelines for evaluation and treatment of anemia and iron deficiency that should serve practicing gastroenterologists.

The researchers made recommendations regarding diagnostic measures to screen for iron- and other anemia-related deficiencies.
The recommendations included 16 statements on triggers for medical intervention, treatment goals, and appropriate therapies.
Dr Gasche's team concluded, "Anemia is a common cause of hospitalization, and prevents physicians from discharging hospitalized patients."
"It is one of the most frequent comorbid conditions in patients with inflammatory bowel disease."
"Anemia therefore needs appropriate attention, and specific care."
