This condition is due to deposition of lipofuscin, and may result in a variety of appearances. The ileocaecal valve is not involved in the melanotic process, neither is neoplastic tissue. In Fig. 3.363 there is well-marked mucosal melanosis with sparing of three metaplastic polyps. The lipofuscin-laden macrophages are well seen in Fig. 3.365.
