Esophagus: expanding metal stentExpanding metal stents are commonly used to maintain an adequate lumen after appropriate dilatation, for example in carcinoma of the oesophagus, bile ducts or the colon. To prevent inward growth of the malignant tissue it may be advisable to use a coated stent (Fig. 2.732). Metal, as opposed to plastic, stents cannot be removed or repositioned after insertion.
