The needle was retrieved endoscopically. This photograph shows the
needle protruding into the lumen of the esophagus. It was grasped with a snare and pulled down into the stomach. There, the end of the needle was grasped with alligator forceps, partially pulled into the biopsy channel of the endoscope and then the instrument (and the needle) was removed. It was a sewing needle with a length of thread still attached.
