Diverticular disease of the colon.
A 78-year old woman admitted with generalised peritonitis. At operation she was found to have a purulent peritonitis secondary to perforation of a diverticulum of the sigmoid colon with peridiverticular abscess formation. A Hartmann's procedure was performed. The photograph shows the resected specimen and the site of perforation - with surrounding local peritonitis.
