Villous adenoma of the rectum plus carcinoma of the sigmoid colon.
A 69 year old woman who presented with rectal bleeding. Colonoscopy
revealed a large polypoidal tumor in the upper rectum. Biopsies showed adenomatous change. Because of its size, the patient underwent formal resection. At operation, a small nodular lesion was palpated 8 cm proximal to the adenoma. This was resected in continuity with the large polyp.
The opened specimen shows the polypoidal lesion to the left and an
ulcerated plaque to the right.
