Erythema abigne due to carcinoma of the sigmoid colon.
An 80-year old woman presented with an 8-week history of severe, colicky lower abdominal pain. The only way to relieve the pain was to grip a hotwater bottle close to the lower abdomen. This is eythema abigne, due to burning from the heat of the hotwater bottle. Almost invariably erytherma abigne is seen in a patient with organic disease - it is not seen in patients with an irritable bowel. This patient had a carcinoma of the sigmoid colon - the pain seemed to be more to the right, probably due to increasing colonic distension.
