Normal pharynx, barium swallow.
A lateral projection of the pharynx and upper oesophagus filled with barium shows a normal anterior indentation (arrow) at C4 level. This is due to laxity of the mucosa over the submucosal venous plexus behind the cricoid cartilage. It is of no pathological significance . the normal retropharyngeal space and prevertebral space together measure only a few millimetres.
