Achalasia of the cardia.
A 23-year old woman with achalasia of the cardia. The chronically
dilated, air-filled esophagus is visible on the plain film. However, the
stomach contains air - which would not happen in everyday life. This X-ray
was taken immediately after an open-access endoscopy for undiagnosed
vomiting, and the gas entered the stomach during the endoscopic procedure.
