Esophageal perforation after insertion of an esophageal stent for carcinoma of the esophagus.
The patient presented with dysphagia due to a mid-esophageal cancer.
Metastatic disease was present and it was decided to insert an Atkinson
tube. The procedure was complicated with perforation of the cervical
esophagus with the rapid development of gross surgical emphysema. The
photograph was taken 12 hours after perforation. There is gross
swelling of the neck, cheek and perioribital tissues.
