Femoral hernia. An 83-year-old woman admitted with two-week history of abdominal pain and vomiting. She was grossly dehydrated and found to have an obstructed left femoral hernia. The patient was resuscitated and taken to the operating room. She was found to have a gangrenous colon (secondary to slow flow) and gangrenous segment of small bowel within the femoral hernia. The surgeon is holding the infarcted small bowel segment. A subtotal colectomy and limited small bowel resection was performed. The second photograph shows a section of the infarcted large bowel.
