Toxic dilatation complicating ulcerative colitis.This middle-aged female patient had a 2-year history of periodic diarrhea and rectal bleeding, recent abdominal distension, and hypotension. The plain abdominal film shows marked gaseous distension of the transverse colon to 8cm, together with widespread islands of edematous mucosa, including the ascending colon. There is also evidence of edema of the properitoneal fat line.
