Grade III esophageal varices.
Varices in the lower third of the esophagus, bluish, tortuous and protruding more than 1/2 of the lumen (grade 3). There are no predictions of increased risk for bleeding (e.g. "cherry red spots"). Since the patient had a previous history of esophageal variceal bleeding, serial band ligation was recommended.
