Chronic appendicitis -
The mucosa of an appendix vermiformis, immunostained for serotonin. Groups of brown immunostained subepithelial neurosecretory cells, as well as intra-glandular Kultschitzky cells, are demonstrated. The development of subepithelial neurosecretory cells, and discharge of biogenic amines by these cells directly onto the surrounding lamina proprial neural plexus, may be associated with symptomatic "neuroappendicopathy".
