Hemorrhoidal varices in cirrhosis.The superior hemorrhoidal vessels are one of the sites of anastomosis between the portal and systemic venous systems. Patients with portal hypertension are at risk for developing large hemorrhoidal varices, as in this example. Recurrent and extensive hemorrhages may occur necessitating a porta-systemic shunt. Injection sclerotherapy should not normally be attempted.
