Rectal prolapse.Complete prolapse of all layers of the rectal wall, as in this case, usually occurs in elderly females. Prolapse may be recurrent or permanent. Patients may present with incontinence of faeces due to stretching of the anal sphincter and mucous discharge from the prolapsed bowel. A variety of operative methods are available for treating complete rectal prolapse, including mesh fixation within the pelvic cavity or perineal excision of the rectum.
